Don’t Be The April Fool

(Originally published April 3, 2020)

Can you believe it was April Fools’ Day yesterday and there were essentially no April Fools jokes. I think it points to the fact that everyone is pretty concerned about where we find ourselves. The “statistics are a little short of staggering”. (This is a quote from the original KA Video of some 30 years ago that the team of Pete Mackert, Bob Oliver and myself put together.) Well, today’s statistics, along with projections for tomorrow, are staggering. It think it points to the fact that we are not in control. We often think that we are in control.

I’m reminded of the parable of the rich man in the gospel from Luke 12: 16-21:

“I will pull down my barns, and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. I will tell my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, be merry." But God said to him, 'You fool, tonight your soul is required of you.”

The rich man had money and health and time on his hands….he thought. We can think we have time, health, and money; it’s time to relax and plan my life for the next years.

But God in his mercy is reminding us that, no the future is not in our hands. This life can slip away in a moment. We must use the time we have to live for Christ, to love God and each other, and to prepare for the time “our soul is required of us.”
