“Quite A Man”

Wow, how fast life goes by. I don’t think you really notice it so much until you get older. I notice it when I see the death announcement of a person who I recognize. On February 6^th George Schultz died. You may ask, who in the world is George Schultz? Oh yeah, didn’t he write the cartoon strip “Peanuts” with Charlie Brown…no that was Charles Schultz… oh,  wasn’t he the bumbling Sergeant Schultz in Hogan’s Heroes? Well, he was no Charlie Brown or Sergeant Schultz.  

In the official announcement of his death, the State Department said “George Shultz was a legend. As Secretary of State, he helped achieve the greatest geopolitical feat of the age: a peaceful end to the Cold War. He negotiated landmark arms control agreements with the Soviet Union and, after leaving office, continued to fight for a world free of nuclear weapons …. He was a visionary.” An economist, diplomat, and businessman, he served in various positions under three different Republican presidents and is one of only two people to have held four different Cabinet level posts.”

George Schultz graduated from Princeton  University before serving in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. After the war, Shultz earned a Ph.D. in industrial economics from the MIT. He was 100 years old when he died. Whenever I saw that George Schultz was involved in a situation, I would breathe a sigh of relief. 

I’m not saying he was a saint; I’m sure he had his flaws. I do know he was married almost 50 years when his first wife died…that’s a good thing. But you have to admit that George Schultz was quite a man who served his country in extraordinary ways. 

I like to pause and say a prayer when such a man passes away .. praying that the Lord would welcome him. For our part I thank God that our country has been blessed with such men. May more great men of stature and integrity serve in the years to come. May he rest in peace.
