“Oh this is my favorite scripture passage, or at least in my top 10 or top 20”. In truth I have a constantly developing list of my favorite scripture passages. Years ago I decided to make a list .… there were about 20 of them which I jotted down in my bible. As I looked at them the other day, I realized that while these are still wonderful and still my favorites, my list has continued to grow.

How does a scripture make the “favorite list”? I believe it’s when the passage answers a question that’s been on my mind. I may be struggling with a question or situation and not fully peaceful … and the scripture brings an answer.
Let me give you an example. In Romans 2:4, you read “Do you not know that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?” That’s really a wonderful truth. Kindness is very attractive; we’re attracted to kind people. Who wants to be around people who are not kind….no one. It’s God’s kindness that attracts the sinner. We tend to listen to kind people…those who care about us and want to help us. The old phrase, “people don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care” is really true. When I’m experiencing God’s kindness, I want to give myself more fully to him, to trust more of my life to him, to repent and turn from my evil ways. Pointing out the kindness of God is a great way to evangelize.
So, what are some of your favorite scriptures, and why are they your favorites? In case you don’t have any that come to mind, I’ll lend you a couple to get the ball rolling. Ready? Try 1Cor. 2:9….. wow, powerful and hopeful.
What about Jer. 31:34…boy that always brings me peace.
And one more, Sir. 7:36… it helps to put steel in my spine in times of temptation.
So remember “The word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” (Heb. 4:12) And that is very good news.
One of my favorites when the children were growing up was Phil 4:13–“I can do all things in him who strengthens me.” Some days I would say it almost all day. The Word of God strengthens. I’ll make my list . Thanks for the reminder🙌🏻
