Many years ago I heard it said that the problem with today’s evangelistic efforts, is that we keep “answering questions that no one is asking”….ie. great answers, but who cares? Who is interested in the answers ? If I’m not interested in something, I don’t tend to pay attention to it.
What interests people today? How do you get someone’s interest? I didn’t think much of the turmoil in the Middle East until the Twin Towers were destroyed on September 11th. People don’t generally think much about their own mortality unless something grabs their interest, like the death of a loved one, or a diagnosis of cancer, or even just getting older.

So, where does that leave us? This isn’t just about evangelizing others, it’s about the evangelization of myself. When I’m “fat, dumb, and happy”, I’m not too worried about my destiny…. “hey I’m doing pretty well… I’ve got a few bucks in the bank, a decent job, pretty healthy…. I’m doing okay”.
It’s hard to keep the edge day in and day out. Even if we’re living a life for Christ, we can get dull, we can lose our edge, we can lose our interest in being holy…in becoming a saint. How do we keep that spiritual edge? How do we stay hungry ?
“Well, we haven’t died and gone to heaven”. We have a great hope of heaven, but we haven’t crossed that bridge yet. We need to stay on our toes. It seems that those who have never won the Super Bowl have more energy and drive to win than those who have ….the hunger is still there…the interest… they haven’t accomplished their goal. Well, we haven’t won our Super Bowl yet… we’re winning because of our wonderful savior, but there’s still time left on the clock.
We need to stay in the game….. we need to continue to “sell all for the pearl of great price, for the treasure in the field”. (Mt. 13:44) Now is not the time to count our money. Holy Spirit, help us to stay sharp. And if we stay sharp, we just might be able to spread the good news of our salvation to a world that is “not interested”. So, it’s time to wake up… to awake the dawn.
“Awake, my soul! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn!I will give thanks to thee, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to thee among the nations. For thy steadfast love is great to the heavens, thy faithfulness to the clouds.Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let thy glory be over all the earth!“ (Psalm 57:8-11)
