I had a good friend in college…we were both studying sciences hoping to go on to medical school or dental school. We were pretty comparable in grades and aptitude. There was one big difference between us. My friend had a passion for becoming a dentist…he was not going to be denied. He didn’t initially get into dental school, but took additional classes, reapplied and ultimately made it. When I spoke to him a few years ago…he had been a dentist for some 50 years. He had a passion that I didn’t. He was seeking a goal with all his heart…. I wasn’t. There’s something about seeking… especially seeking with all your heart.
Scripture speaks a lot about seeking the Lord. “Those who love me, I also love, and those who seek me find me.” (Proverbs 8:17)
A key to finding the Lord, is seeking after him. “Seek Christ at all cost and be prepared for the joy of finding him.” (Magnificat,11-8-20)
The book of Wisdom reminds us, “Wisdom is radiant and unfading, and she is easily discerned by those who love her, and is found by those who seek her.She hastens to make herself known to those who desire her. (Wisdom 6:12-13) Jesus tells us in the Beatitudes to “ seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.” (Matthew 6:33) Remember that God is also seeking us and will provide a way for us to find him.
So, where does this leave us? What should we tell ourself and those we are trying to help find God. Well, we must seek after the Lord with all our strength. Like my friend from college, we cannot be deterred from our goal by obstacles that arise. Things will distract us from our goal…if we give up, we won’t make it.
Lord increase our desire for finding and knowing you. Show us what’s at stake. Help us to seek you with all of our heart and strength. Help us Lord to do that. Help our friends and family to do that.
If we seek the Lord, we will find him…and that is very good news.
