“The Light Shines In The Darkness”
Who doesn’t enjoy a beautiful star lit night with the stars shining like diamonds, or a sunset that changes in colors by the minute as the day fades into night. What about the Autumn moon that seems to fill the entire sky with different colors. Sometimes I equate darkness with night, but they are not the same. Nighttime is often beautiful but it’s not darkness. It’s beautiful because of the partial light that is there… the moon and the stars and fire are the light in the darkness. Years ago we were in New Hampshire. There were no city lights nearby. The stars were uncountable. You could see satellites go by, and an occasional shooting star. It this case because of the darkness, the light was more vivid, more vibrant.
Darkness is the absence of light. Most of us have never experienced total darkness. Being in total darkness is like being blind. It’s not half-light or dimness or relative darkness, it’s blindness. You can’t see your hand in front of your face. When scripture speaks of darkness, that is what is meant…. total darkness… no light. Darkness is a symbol of evil or mystery or fear. Light is a symbol of God and goodness and peace. “The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5) I remember one time in high school when we made a clandestine visit to one of my friends who was in the seminary… like special ops troops we snuck in and got some goodies out of the frig and ate them in this room that was almost totally dark. Someone lit a match and immediately every eye focused on that tiny spec of light…it was tiny but it got everyone’s attention.
Well, our world seems to be getting darker. But even as it does, the light of Christ will shine brighter. It will get everyone’s attention. And this particular light, the Light of Christ, will dispel the darkness, the evil, the fear, the mystery. Truly Jesus is the Light of the World. We have nothing to fear.
