Webster says that “Imagination is the act or power of forming a mental image of something not present to the senses or never before wholly perceived in reality”. Hmmm, I guess that’s a pretty good definition. Yet like the boy in the picture, when I was in grade school, we weren’t encouraged to use our imagination…. “Touhill, wake up and stop looking out the window… now tell me what’s 2+2”……. A-a-a-a-a … 17 ?
Sometimes when I’m saying the prayer “Glory Be To The Father”, my imagination can get in the way….”Glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning”. I begin to think , what was it like in the beginning…in the beginning before creation. Woooooah. What was it like? I picture a box, like a broadcast booth at a football stadium, floating in the sky (although there was no sky). In the box is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit… but they are spirits, not body. They’re talking but I’m not sure what they are talking about. Hmmmmm. It’s at this point that I realize that I’m not God and that God is a lot smarter than me. In this case my imagination can lead me to trust in the goodness of God. I know I can’t figure everything out so my hope is that the “Good God” is going to take care of everything. The main thing is that I give God glory, not that I figure out the infinite nature of God. Then I suddenly a hear a familiar voice again saying “Touhill, I told you to wake up and stop looking out the window, ….. now what’s the square root of 8 zillion ?”
