The other day we were driving home from our vacation at the Jersey Shore… relaxed, savoring our time away, thinking about some things we needed to do when we got home…. Judy was at the wheel and I was looking out the window.
Quickly the drizzle turned into a monsoon. We found ourselves on the New Jersey Turnpike unable to see the cars around us due to the torrential rain.
My relaxed demeanor turned to high level anxiety… windshield wipers on max, giving advice to Judy, praying for God’s protection…As we made our way home, we saw two accidents… we were a brief second or brief mistake by any of the hundreds of cars to becoming the next accident. We were very thankful as we finally made it off I-78 at exit 36 and pulled into our driveway.
Today is the feast of the “Guardian Angels”. As we were heading home from mass, Judy said “boy, the guardian angels really protected us the other day during the rain storm”. I usually don’t think much about my guardian angel, yet it doesn’t mean they aren’t always helping us.
Jesus reminds us, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly father.” (Mt. 18:1-10) We’re reminded in the Book of Exodus, “See, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared…” (Exodus 23:20-23)
Thank God for angels that are protecting us day and night, even when we don’t recognize their presence or help. Sometimes I picture meeting my guardian angel when I die, ….. he walks up on crutches with a big bandage on his head and punches me in the nose… he blurts out “if you knew what I went through saving you from so many dangers … see this broken arm, that was the time you were fooling around in school and fell off the bleachers… see this bruise on my forehead, that was the time…..”
How many times have God’s angels saved us from harm. Thank you Lord for sending your angels “to guard me on the way and bring me to the place you have prepared. And thanks to my guardian angel.
